THE WAFT / FAQ + CARE GUIDE

Answers, without the beige energy.

Home fragrance, bath, body, car, gifting and the small details that make the whole ritual behave better. Start with what you bought — or the problem currently testing your patience.

Product directions and ingredient lists on the individual product page always take priority where a formula or format has product-specific instructions.

01 / Candles + wax melts

Burn. Melt. Behave.

Flame when you want ritual. Heat when you want faster throw.

The wax does the work. A little care makes it work better.

What wax blend do WAFT candles use?

Our candles use a performance-led soy blend with coconut oil and shea butter. The blend is chosen for a smooth melt pool, controlled burn and reliable fragrance release rather than for a one-ingredient marketing claim.

What sizes are the candles, and how long do they burn?

WAFT candles are available in 70 g and 214 g formats. As a guide, the 70 g candle gives around 12–15 hours of burn time and the 214 g around 35–40 hours. Wick care, room temperature, draughts and individual burn sessions can change the total.

How do I burn my candle properly?

Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each burn. On the first burn, allow the melt pool to travel close to the edge before extinguishing. Keep the candle away from draughts and never burn for more than 4 hours at a time.

Why is my candle tunnelling?

Tunnelling usually starts when early burn sessions are too short. Wax follows the melt pattern it has already created, so give the first one or two burns enough time to form a broad, even melt pool. If a tunnel has already formed, contact us and we can help you troubleshoot it.

Why does my candle look frosty, uneven or slightly sweaty?

Soy-rich wax can show frosting, crystallisation, small surface changes or tiny beads of oil after temperature shifts. These are normal characteristics of the wax blend and do not automatically mean the candle is faulty. If you see significant separation, leaking or unusual wick behaviour, stop using it and contact us.

Why does the scent feel different after I have been in the room for a while?

Your nose adapts. Olfactory fatigue can make a fragrance feel quieter even while it is still present. Leave the room for a few minutes and come back before deciding the candle has stopped performing.

How do I use WAFT wax melts?

Place the recommended amount of wax in a compatible wax warmer and use the warmer as directed by its manufacturer. Do not add water to the wax. Replace the melt when the fragrance has faded, and let the wax cool before removing it.

How long does a wax melt last?

Fragrance life depends on the warmer temperature, room size, airflow and scent profile. Most melts give several hours of noticeable fragrance across one or more warming sessions. Replace the wax when you can no longer smell it at a useful level.

Can I mix WAFT wax melts?

Yes. If you want to experiment, combine small amounts of two scents in the same compatible warmer. Start with less rather than filling the dish — scent layering works better when the room can still breathe.

How do I clean a wax warmer?

Switch it off and let the wax cool. Remove the set wax or absorb a small amount of still-soft wax with a cotton pad, then wipe the dish clean according to the warmer manufacturer’s instructions. Never pour wax down a drain.

02 / Reed diffusers

Set it. Let it linger.

Continuous fragrance without flame, plugs or daily effort.

Placement, reeds, heat and airflow decide how quietly — or loudly — it behaves.

How long does a WAFT reed diffuser last?

A 100 ml reed diffuser typically lasts around 8–12 weeks. Temperature, airflow, room size, reed count and how often you flip the reeds all affect evaporation. Warm rooms and frequent flipping usually use the liquid faster.

How many reeds should I use?

Start with 5–7 reeds. More reeds generally increase throw and evaporation; fewer reeds keep the scent softer and can extend the life of the diffuser. Small bathrooms and bedrooms often need less than large open spaces.

How often should I flip the reeds?

Flip them when the scent throw has noticeably softened — around once a week is a useful starting point. More flipping gives a quick fragrance lift but also increases evaporation. Flip over a sink or protected surface and wipe any spills immediately.

Why could I smell my diffuser strongly at first and less later?

Fresh reeds absorb quickly at the start, so the first few days can feel more noticeable. After that, diffusion settles into a steadier background level. Your nose can also adapt to a scent you live with every day.

Where should I place my reed diffuser?

Use a stable, protected surface in an area with gentle air movement. Keep it away from direct sun, heaters, strong draughts, open windows and air-conditioning vents. Avoid placing it where a spill could damage wood, paint, stone, plastic or other finished surfaces.

Can I refill the bottle?

The vessel can be reused with a compatible reed-diffuser formulation and fresh reeds. Do not use WAFT 10 ml Diffuser Oil as a reed-diffuser refill — it is a different product made for compatible electric diffusers and ceramic burners.

Why is the liquid changing colour?

Some fragrance materials naturally darken or shift in colour as they are exposed to air, light and heat. A modest colour change can be normal. If you notice separation, unusual sediment or a major change in smell, stop using it and contact us.

Why is my diffuser not filling a large open-plan room?

Reed diffusers are designed for steady background fragrance, not maximum projection. Large or highly ventilated spaces may need more than one diffuser or a more active format such as a candle, wax melt or diffuser oil session.

03 / Room + linen mists

Spray. Reset. Move on.

Instant atmosphere for rooms, bedding and suitable soft furnishings.

Fast fragrance works best when it is misted, not soaked.

What sizes do the room + linen mists come in?

WAFT Room + Linen Mists are available in 50 ml, 100 ml and 200 ml sizes, depending on the scent and current stock.

How should I use a room + linen mist?

Shake gently, then mist into the air or onto suitable fabric from roughly 30 cm away. Start with two or three sprays, let the fragrance settle, and add more only if the room needs it.

Can I use the mist on bedding, curtains and cushions?

Yes, on suitable fabrics. Patch test pale, delicate, vintage or speciality textiles in an inconspicuous area first. Mist lightly and allow bedding or fabric to dry before prolonged skin contact.

What should I avoid spraying?

Avoid eyes, skin, pets, polished or painted surfaces, leather, electronics, screens, silk and other delicate or porous finishes. If you are unsure about a material, patch test first or keep the product in the air rather than on the surface.

How long does the fragrance last?

There is no honest single number. Open air clears fragrance faster than fabric, and longevity changes with airflow, temperature, scent profile, room size and how much product was used. Use the mist for an immediate lift rather than continuous all-day fragrance.

Can I use the room mist in my car?

You can mist lightly into the air with the vehicle empty or well ventilated, but avoid direct contact with leather, dashboards, screens, plastics and upholstery. For ongoing car fragrance, the 8 ml Car Diffuser is the format designed for that job.

Why does the scent seem to disappear quickly?

Open-air fragrance naturally disperses, and your nose also adapts quickly to a scent you have just sprayed. Fabric usually holds fragrance longer than air. For continuous background scent, pair the mist with a reed diffuser rather than repeatedly over-spraying.

Is it a body spray?

No. WAFT Room + Linen Mist is a home-fragrance product, not a body mist or perfume. Do not apply it to skin.

04 / Diffuser oils + car diffusers

Drops. Drive. Control the volume.

Concentrated fragrance for active diffusion — and a smaller system for the car.

These are two different products. Use each in the format it was made for.

What is WAFT Diffuser Oil for?

The 10 ml Diffuser Oil is a concentrated home-fragrance format for compatible electric diffusers and ceramic oil burners. It lets you control intensity by adjusting the amount used according to the device, room and scent.

How many drops should I use?

Start low and build. The correct amount depends on the capacity and design of your diffuser or burner, so follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions first. A smaller room usually needs less than an open-plan space.

Do I add Diffuser Oil to water?

Only if your device is designed to be used that way. Many ultrasonic diffusers use water, while ceramic burners have their own operating instructions. Never pour fragrance oil into an electrical appliance unless its manufacturer says it is compatible.

Can I use Diffuser Oil as a reed-diffuser refill?

No. WAFT Diffuser Oil and WAFT Reed Diffuser liquid are formulated for different delivery systems. Using the wrong liquid can give poor performance and may damage surfaces or equipment.

Can I put Diffuser Oil on my skin?

No. It is a concentrated home-fragrance product and is not formulated as a perfume, body oil or skincare product.

How do I set up the 8 ml Car Diffuser?

Remove the inner stopper, replace the wooden cap securely and tip the bottle briefly so a small amount of fragrance can wet the wood. Return it upright and hang it securely. Refresh the cap with another brief tip only when the scent has softened.

Why is my car diffuser stronger on some days than others?

Temperature and airflow make a noticeable difference. A warm vehicle usually increases evaporation, while cooler conditions can make the scent feel quieter. Air-conditioning, recirculation, open windows and olfactory fatigue also change what you perceive.

How do I prevent a car diffuser from leaking?

Keep the bottle upright, tip it only briefly to refresh the wooden cap and make sure the cap is secure. Fragrance liquid can damage dashboards, plastics, leather, upholstery and painted or polished finishes, so wipe any spill immediately.

Where should I hang the car diffuser?

Hang it securely where it cannot obstruct your view, controls or driving. Keep it upright and avoid leaving it in direct, extreme heat for long periods where possible.

05 / Bath salts + bath bombs

Soak. Fizz. Stay a while.

Warm water, mineral salts, fragrance and considerably less urgency.

Bath products are made for the water, not for pretending they are medical treatment.

What is in the Mineral Bath Salts?

The mineral soak combines Epsom salts, Dead Sea salt, Himalayan pink salt, sodium bicarbonate, kaolin clay, polysorbate 80 and fragrance. It is designed to change the sensory feel of the bath while dispersing WAFT fragrance through warm water.

How much bath salt should I use?

Add a generous handful to warm running water, swirl to help the salts and clay disperse, then allow them to dissolve before settling in. You can adjust the amount to the size of your bath and how mineral-rich you want the soak to feel.

What is in the 200 g Bath Bomb?

The bath bomb uses sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, kaolin clay, corn starch, Epsom salt, cream of tartar, jojoba oil, Kalahari melon seed oil, polysorbate 80 and fragrance. One 200 g bomb is designed for one full bath.

How do I use the Bath Bomb?

Remove all packaging and place one bomb into comfortably warm bath water. Allow it to fizz and disperse before settling in. Use one bomb per bath.

Will the bath feel slippery?

It can. Bath salts, clay and botanical oils change the feel of the water and surfaces, so take care when entering and leaving the bath and rinse the tub after use.

Can I use these products in a spa bath or jacuzzi?

Check the bath or jacuzzi manufacturer’s instructions first. Oils, clays and salts are not suitable for every jet, filter or plumbing system. If the manufacturer does not specifically allow them, use the product in a standard bath instead.

Are the bath products suitable for sensitive skin?

Skin is individual. These are fragranced products, so avoid use on broken or irritated skin and discontinue if discomfort occurs. If you have very reactive skin, known fragrance allergies or a medical skin condition, check with a healthcare professional before use.

How should I store bath salts and bath bombs?

Keep them tightly sealed in a cool, dry place away from humidity and direct sunlight. Moisture can activate fizzing products early and can cause salts to clump.

06 / Shower steamers

Steam. Scent. Reset.

Fragrance for the shower atmosphere, not a bath bomb and not skincare.

Hot Minute works with steam. Keep it off the body and out of the main water stream.

What is a shower steamer?

A shower steamer is a fragranced fizzing tablet designed to release scent into the warm, steamy shower environment. It is not intended to moisturise the skin and it is not a bath bomb.

How do I use Hot Minute Shower Steamers?

Place one steamer on the shower floor or a ledge where it will get splashed without sitting directly under the main water stream. Add a little water to start it, then let the shower steam carry the fragrance.

How do I make a steamer last longer?

Move it further away from the direct stream so it activates more slowly. If you want a faster, stronger release, allow a little more water to reach it. Do not hold it in your hand while it is fizzing.

Can I use a shower steamer as a bath bomb?

No. Hot Minute is formulated for shower atmosphere. Use a WAFT Bath Bomb or Mineral Bath Salts when the product will be sitting in bath water against the body.

Can I rub a shower steamer on my skin?

No. Do not use it as soap, exfoliant or body treatment. Avoid direct contact with the face, eyes, intimate areas, broken skin and irritated skin.

Why does the scent feel different in different showers?

Steam level, ventilation, water temperature, shower size and where the steamer is placed all affect fragrance release. A very open or strongly ventilated shower will clear fragrance faster than a smaller, steamier space.

Why are my steamers soft or starting to fizz in the jar?

Moisture has reached them. Keep the container tightly closed and store it away from shower spray, steam and humidity. Always use dry hands when taking one out.

Can shower steamers make the floor slippery?

Yes. Fizzing ingredients and fragrance materials can leave residue. Rinse the shower floor after use and take care while moving around.

07 / Body care

Useful. Close. Considered.

Five jobs, not a ten-step routine.

Lips, dry skin, healed tattoos, pulse points and beards each get the product made for them.

What is Lip Service?

Lip Service is a 15 g unfragranced, flavour-free protective lip balm made with conditioning oils and butters, beeswax and vitamin E. Use a small amount on the lips whenever they feel dry or tight.

Is Lip Service vegan?

No. Lip Service contains beeswax (Cera Alba), which is animal-derived. It is unfragranced and flavour-free, but it should not be described as vegan.

What is Dry Tax for?

Dry Tax is a 50 g conditioning balm for dry skin, rough patches, hands, cuticles, elbows, knees and fully healed tattoos. It is not an aftercare product for a fresh tattoo or open wound.

Can I use Dry Tax on a new tattoo?

No. Use it only on fully healed tattooed skin. Fresh tattoos are healing wounds and should be cared for according to your tattoo artist’s or healthcare professional’s aftercare advice.

What is Proximity?

Proximity is a 50 g solid fragrance balm for pulse points and small areas of skin. It combines skin-softening oils and butters with fine fragrance for a close, quiet scent rather than the projection of a spray perfume.

Where should I apply Proximity?

Warm a small amount with a clean fingertip and apply to wrists, neck, collarbone or other small areas of intact skin. Avoid lips, eyes, broken or irritated skin. Reapply when you want the scent closer again.

What is Chin Discipline?

Chin Discipline is a 50 g beard balm made to soften coarse beard hair, condition the skin beneath and give light control to flyaways. Warm a small amount between your fingers, work it through the beard from root to tip, then shape as needed.

Do the body balms contain beeswax?

Several do. Lip Service, Dry Tax, Proximity and Chin Discipline contain beeswax in their current formulations, so the body-care range should not be treated as universally vegan. Check the ingredient list on the individual product page if this matters to you.

Why has my balm become softer or firmer?

Butters, waxes and oils respond to temperature. A balm may soften in a hot room and firm up in cooler conditions without being spoiled. Store it closed, cool and away from direct sun. If its smell, colour or texture changes unusually, stop using it and contact us.

Should I patch test body products?

Yes, especially fragranced products or if your skin is reactive. Apply a small amount to intact skin first. Stop use if irritation, burning or persistent redness develops.

08 / Private Matter

Light. Melt. Extinguish. Touch.

A low-melt massage candle that becomes warm body oil.

Candle-shaped body care. Different rules from a room candle.

What exactly is Private Matter?

Private Matter is a 160 g low-melt massage candle made with soy wax, nourishing butters, botanical oils, vitamin E and fine fragrance. Once a small melt pool forms, the candle is extinguished and the warm liquid is used as massage and skin-conditioning oil.

How do I use it safely?

Light the wick and allow a small pool to melt. Extinguish the flame completely. Check the temperature with a fingertip, then pour a small amount into your hands or onto intact skin and massage in. Never pour the product while the flame is burning.

Is Private Matter a normal scented candle?

No. It is formulated as a body product that uses a wick to warm the formula. Do not use it as a long-burn room candle or treat its performance like a conventional home-fragrance candle.

How warm should the oil feel?

Warm and comfortable, never hot. Always extinguish the flame and test the temperature before broader application. If it feels too warm, allow it to cool.

Where can I use it?

Use it on intact external body skin for massage or targeted skin conditioning. Avoid the eyes, lips, face if sensitive, intimate areas, broken skin and irritated skin.

Can Private Matter be used as lubricant?

No. It is not formulated or tested as an intimate lubricant, and oil-rich formulas may be incompatible with some barrier contraceptives. Keep use to external body skin.

Can it mark bedding or clothing?

It can. The formula contains oils and butters, so allow it to absorb before contact with delicate fabrics and keep it away from materials that can show oil marks.

Why does the candle feel softer or firmer depending on the weather?

That is normal for a low-melt formula made with wax, butters and oils. Store it upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sun and excessive heat.

Do I need to trim the wick?

Yes. Keep the wick trimmed and use short heating sessions only long enough to create the amount of warm oil you need. Never leave it burning unattended.

09 / Fragrance + ingredients

What is in it. What it is for.

No fog machine. Just clearer product truth.

A scent can keep its character across formats without behaving identically in every base.

Are WAFT scents exactly identical in every format?

They share the same intended fragrance identity, but different product bases release fragrance differently and some format-specific blends are adjusted so they perform properly. Think of it as the same character interpreted for the format, rather than a promise that every ingredient ratio is identical.

Why can the notes on one format look slightly different from another?

A reed diffuser, candle, room mist and body product do not carry fragrance in the same way. We may emphasise different parts of the scent profile or use a format-specific blend to preserve the overall character and performance. The product page for the format you are buying is the source of truth for its published notes.

Do you use essential oils or fragrance oils?

WAFT uses fine fragrance oils and fragrance blends selected for the intended product format. The range is not positioned as an essential-oil-only line.

Are WAFT products vegan?

Not all of them. Several body-care products contain beeswax, so the range should not be described as universally vegan. Where a product contains animal-derived material, it should be clear from the ingredient list.

Are WAFT products cruelty-free?

We do not test our finished products on animals. Ingredient and supplier documentation is reviewed as part of product development, but cruelty-free and vegan are not the same claim.

How do you decide how much fragrance to use?

Fragrance level is set by the product format, performance testing and the safety documentation available for the fragrance materials used. Skin-contact and home-fragrance products have different exposure categories, so they are not dosed as though they are interchangeable.

Can fragrance cause irritation or allergies?

It can for some people. Fragrance contains aromatic materials that may trigger sensitivity in susceptible users. Follow the directions for the product, patch test skin products where appropriate, and stop use if irritation occurs.

Are home-fragrance products safe around pets?

There is no responsible blanket 'pet-safe' claim for fragranced products. Use them with ventilation, keep liquids, wax and products out of reach, never allow ingestion or direct contact, and give pets the ability to leave the fragranced space. If your animal has respiratory disease, sensitivities or a known medical condition, ask your vet before use.

What about pregnancy, babies or medical sensitivities?

Fragrance tolerance is personal and circumstances differ. If you are pregnant, caring for a baby, have asthma, migraines, fragrance allergy or another medical sensitivity, use less, ventilate well and ask an appropriate healthcare professional if you are uncertain. WAFT products are not medical treatments.

Where are WAFT products made?

WAFT is a South African brand and the range is small-batch crafted in Johannesburg. Product format, components and raw materials may come from different suppliers, but formulation, product development and brand production are managed locally.

10 / Choosing + gifting

Find the one that fits.

Start with the mood. Then the space. Then the behaviour.

You do not need a perfumery degree to choose a room fragrance.

I have never bought WAFT. Where should I start?

If scent is the main uncertainty, start with the Scent Test Edit so you can meet the fragrances before committing to a full-size format. If you already know the job you need done, use Find Your WAFT to choose by mood, room and behaviour.

Which format gives the fastest fragrance?

Room + Linen Mist is the fastest instant reset. Wax melts and Diffuser Oils give stronger active scent sessions with more control. Candles build gradually. Reed diffusers are the quiet, continuous option.

Can I use one scent across several rooms?

Yes. Change the format and intensity rather than forcing one product to do every job. A mist can give an immediate lift, a reed diffuser can maintain the background and a candle can bring the same scent character into an evening ritual.

What is the easiest gift if I do not know their fragrance taste?

Start with discovery, a best-selling scent or a curated gift set rather than guessing at the most polarising scent in the range. Find Their WAFT can also narrow the choice by the person, room or mood you are buying for.

Can I mix different scents in one gift or in the same home?

Yes. You do not need to make the entire house smell identical. Keep neighbouring spaces reasonably compatible and use bolder scents where the room can carry them. A clean bathroom, warmer lounge and softer bedroom can still feel coherent.

Do you sell gift cards?

Not currently. If that changes, the live Gifting page will show it. For now, discovery and curated gift sets are the safer options when you do not want to choose one full-size scent blindly.

Can I smell WAFT in person?

Yes, when WAFT is trading at a market or through an active retail stockist. Check the Markets + Stockists page for current places and dates before travelling.

11 / Orders + returns

Bought something. Need answers.

Delivery, tracking, damage, changes and the admin nobody came here for.

Clear expectations are part of the product.

Where do you deliver?

WAFT ships through courier partners across South Africa. Delivery availability and cost are calculated according to the address and options presented at checkout.

How long does delivery take?

Most courier deliveries arrive within about 1–4 business days once dispatched, depending on the destination and courier conditions. Peak periods, remote areas and events outside our control can take longer.

How do I track my order?

Once the parcel is handed to the courier, tracking details are sent using the contact information supplied with your order. If you have not received them or the tracking has not updated meaningfully, contact us with your order number.

Can I change my delivery address?

Contact us as soon as possible. We can usually change the address before dispatch, but once the courier has collected the parcel, changes may not be possible or may create an additional delivery charge.

Can I cancel an order?

Contact us immediately. If the order has not been processed or dispatched, we will confirm what is still possible. Custom, personalised, opened or already-used products may be treated differently from standard unopened goods.

Can I return or exchange something?

Unused, unopened and undamaged standard products can generally be returned within 7 days of delivery, subject to the returns policy and applicable consumer law. Contact us before sending anything back so the return can be logged correctly.

Can opened bath, body or fragrance products be returned because I changed my mind?

For hygiene, safety and product-integrity reasons, opened or used bath, body and fragrance products are not accepted as change-of-mind returns. If the product is faulty, damaged or incorrect, contact us so we can deal with the actual problem.

What if my order arrives damaged or leaking?

Photograph the outer packaging, shipping label, internal packaging and affected product as soon as possible. Contact us within 24–48 hours with your order number and the images so we can investigate and resolve it quickly.

What if I received the wrong item?

Contact us with your order number and a clear photo of what arrived. Do not use the incorrect product while the issue is being resolved.

How do I contact WAFT about an order?

Email hello@thewaft.co.za or use the contact/WhatsApp options on the website. Include your order number so we can get to the useful part faster.

12 / Trade + custom enquiries

More than one room?

Stockists, corporate gifting, events and larger orders.

If the brief is bigger than a normal cart, talk to us before forcing it through one.

Do you work with retail stockists?

Yes, WAFT welcomes relevant stockist and wholesale enquiries. Tell us about your store, location, audience and the products you are interested in so we can assess fit and current capacity.

Do you offer corporate gifting or bulk orders?

Yes, subject to lead time, stock and production capacity. For larger quantities, contact us with the date, quantity, budget range, delivery requirements and whether you need one destination or multiple.

Can WAFT create something custom for an event or brand?

Possibly. Custom fragrance, packaging, gifting and event requests are assessed case by case because lead time, minimum quantities, compliance and production complexity matter. Send the brief before assuming a custom option is available.

Can I book WAFT for a market, pop-up or event?

Event and market enquiries are welcome. Include the event date, location, expected audience, trading requirements and what you want WAFT to provide.

Where should trade enquiries go?

Use the contact form or email hello@thewaft.co.za and select or mention wholesale, stockist, corporate, custom or event enquiry so it reaches the right conversation.

Still not answered?

Tell us what is misbehaving.

Send the product name, scent, order number where relevant, and a photo or short video if something is not performing as expected. Specifics get you a useful answer much faster than “it is weird”.
